Scene One

“I think I just broke a tooth,” Monte grumbled, feeling as if he’d just woken up Christmas morning to a stocking full of coal. That had to be the hardest peppermint candy he’d ever tried to bite into.
“Oh, you need to get that looked at, eh?” Snowflake huffed a little, ice crystals forming on his long, black beard. “Better call a sled down to the village now or you’ll never make it.”
“I can’t lose that much production time.” The woodcutter elves had to get their quota. Somehow, retro wooden trains were making a comeback this year. Thank Santa for sustainable magic forests. Too bad all that wood didn’t miraculously cut itself.
“Well, maybe you can find a dentist who makes house calls.” Snowy, as Snowflake preferred to be called, laughed really loud and slapped his hand against his muscled thigh. Monte did love Snowy’s legs.
“Hey, that’s not a bad idea.” He propped his axe against the log he was chopping and pulled out his radio. Most cell service sucked at the poles, no matter what service plan you chose. He keyed up Frieda at the head office.
“Have cocoa, will travel,” she intoned, which was her refrain for most of December.
“Hey, Fred,” Monte murmured while his tooth began to throb. “Do we have any traveling dentists? I just broke a tooth, and I can’t come down until the end of the week.”
“Extraction or root canal?”
“How should I know? It’s in the back, kinda.”
Hrm.” He heard rapid tapping as she checked the database. “No. Nope. Oh, way too old.”
Just about the time Monte was ready to give up and tell her to make an appointment for him in the village, Frieda made a noise like an overly excited duck.
“Ha! Here we are. Traveling dentist. Board certified. I’ll pop him on a reindeer this afternoon.”
“You’re the best.” His words slurred a little, his gums beginning to swell a bit.
“I am.” He could almost hear her fluff her bright red hair, a habit she would swear she didn’t have, but one she did about eight times an hour. “Laters, Big M.”
“Thanks again.” Monte glanced at Snowflake. “You got any aspirin?”
“Nah. Pack some snow around it. That will deaden it for a bit.” Snowy went back to work, chopping, whistling a jaunty tune that sounded like Bernie the Blue-Nosed Abominable.
Sighing, Monte grabbed a handful of snow and did just that, pushing it into his mouth so it would soothe the ache. He almost screamed at the shocking cold, but then his tooth went numb, the Santa snow doing its job.
Now he would just get back to work and wait for this traveling dentist to come do his job.
Those trains weren’t gonna make themselves.
